Have you received the message about Earth Hour tomorrow, March 28, 2009?  I have received my message through skype.   A good friend of mine working for an environmental non-profit organization sent me a message about earth hour tomorrow.

This is a call to put off electricity for an hour tomorrow from 8:30 – 9:30 in the evening.  The act would make manifest that we support the global call for awareness for the environment with its threats of  climate change and other concerns.

Earth hour which was observed last year has saved almost 80 megawatts.  For this year, organizers aim for a hundred megawatts savings.

So, pledge to help Mother Nature and send this message of Earth Hour to friends and relatives in whatever way possible.  Use instant messaging, emails or other means like Voice Over Internet Protocol.   For those who have families abroad, use VoIP for cheaper international rates.

Putting the world into total black-out tomorrow could mean a brighter tomorrow.  We are all connected. Get connected.

More in another time…

I am getting too nostalgic and sad these past few days after learning that one of my idols passed away after fighting the happy battle which is cancer.  He was too young to go and too many things yet to accomplish.

Perhaps, I am getting old.  But then again, perhaps, many people have passed away.  And then, there’s this song which says, “If I have a line to heaven, I swear, I would call you there…”

Fortunately though, in our corporeal world, we have landlines to keep us connected.  We have the text messaging which is so popular for us to get in touch and communicate.

In the virtual world, we can have instant messaging.  We can write emails. We can use VoIP.  We can compare notes.  We can choose our VoIP service Providers. We have a lot of choices to connect with other people from around the world.

I guess this is what matters most, whether we use landlines or Voice over Internet Protocol, connectivity matters. With connectivity, there are relationships.  So when we pass this world and we might not have that line to heaven, the memories shared will be worth keeping alive…

The term telephony denotes the science, technology, or system of communication by telephone. In this period we are enjoying the benefits of affordable telephony through Voice over Internet Protocol. All we need is to choose the right VoIP service provider available.

With this detail, we ask the question, how did it all evolve? Without really going into history lectures, we are informed that in the 1870s, Alexander Graham Bell designed a device which could send out speech electrically which later on became known as the telephone.

The idea of cellular phones began in 1947. This was prompted by researchers observation of mobile or car phones. This urged them to use small cells or range of service area with frequency reuse which would enable them to increase the traffic capacity of mobile phones substantially. At that time though, the technology to do so still needed to be invented.

However, look where telephony is right now? After Krisztina Holly, Cassidy Brookins and Chris Brookins co-invented Visual Voice, the first Windows-based computer telephony development tool which let us create complex telephony systems, with call answering, voice-mail, call placing, and fax transmission, telephony has trekked to a higher level. We now have what is known to be Voice Over Internet Protocol or VoIP.
